Collagen is one of the fibrous glycoproteins found in extra cellular matrix of animals. Its structure is in triple helix which gives collagen a high tensile strength. Furthermore, collagens of cornea have 90° angle between each other. This ordered packing of fibers and uniformity of size decreases the amount of scattering light. Therefore, cornea gains its transparent characteristic. In the cases where cornea looses its ability to provide sufficient light penetration to retina, it is very vital to transplant mimicked cornea. In the laboratory, type I collagen is used to make foam scaffolds with different pore sizes for keratocytes .
