Research Field:

 

Biodegradable bone plates. Fractured long bones are repaired by fixing the fragments together with compressional fracture fixation plates (bone plates). These devices are usually made of metals because of their tolerability to high compressive stresses. Indeed their tolerance to compressive strengths are much higher than the bone itself, causing partial or complete shielding of the stress. However part of this stress should be applied to the fracture site for the proper healing of the tissue. Production of a polymer-ceramic composite biodegradable bone plate that can maintain the necessary stress tolerance without causing stress-shielding is the purpose of my current studies.
